Wildly Popular Musical is the Pick-Me-Up We All Need

From the first familiar note that mystic Rafiki belts out to the heavens as Disney’s The Lion King begins at Altria Theater, you know you’re in for a magical experience.

The hugely popular musical starts and ends with the triumphant song Circle of Life, which teaches us about an everlasting loves that lingers and grows even after this life on earth ends.

On one hand the show is larger than life, on the other it is about life. It is the story of Simba, a young lion in line to be king. We see Simba and his friend, Nala, grow up before our eyes, learning the way of the world and eventually the true meaning of the circle of life.

Simba, who runs away from life after his father’s death, finally realizes with the help of the wise Rafiki that his father’s memory lives in him and he must not abandon his potential as king of the pride, even if that means battling his uncle Scar.

The show immerses you into the story it weaves not only through great acting and singing but also through its captivating musical score, creative puppetry, innovative scenery, and lighting. The seamless flow of action sweeps you up like swirling waters and transports you to the magical Pridelands in Africa.

The ever-changing colors in the show reflect not only the action, but also the pageantry and spirit of the musical. Birds fly, grasses sway to the gentle breeze, and the animals of the land parade down the aisles in grand spectacle.

The show last played Altria in 2016, and since then it has been sprinkled with a slight refresh to keep up with the times and enhance the experience.

The cast in the touring production lives and breathes each character with effortless ease and emotion.

Young Simba and Young Nala are as cute, adventurous, and energetic as the lion cubs they portray. Darian Sanders and Kayla Cyphers bring a wealth of talent to their roles as adult Simba and Nanla, respectively.

As Rafiki (Mukelisiwe Goba) delights with her soaring voice and spirited performance. Jürgen Hooper as the colorful  Zazu adds a fun element to the show as do the comic duo of meerkat Timon (Nick Cordileone) and warthog Pumbaa (played by John E. Brady on March 10).

And, The Lion King would lack that element of suspense if it weren’t for the evil lion Scar (Spencer Plachy) who is wickedly entertaining.

As it has been in the past, Disney’s The Lion King is a show you don’t want to miss, especially during these trying times, as we all try to move past the pandemic. Let’s face it, we all need to be entertained and this production knows how to do that very well.

Disney’s The Lion King runs through March 20 at Altria Theater. For showtimes, ticketes, and COVID-19 safety protocol, visit Broadway in Richmond.
