Revealing an unknown slice of radio history, Virginia Repertory’s On Air provides a peek at the evolution of radio during the iconic post-World War I roaring twenties. This era of renewal after one of the most difficult periods of world history depicted in On Air is a welcome and timely reminder of American resilience and ingenuity.
In this sweetly told story, we meet Frank (Colton Needles), Flora (Emily Dandridge), and son Francis/young Frank Conrad (Eli Davis the night I saw it) who together were pioneers in boosting radio technology into the mass communication era, and in programming innovation. While inventor Frank, with friend and partner Harry P. Davis (Neal Gallini-Burdick), labored for years over revolutionizing radio technology, Flora and Harry’s wife Agnes (Taylor Baltimore) commiserate about their work-obsessed husbands. This tension, along with other cultural and political events of the era such as the women’s suffrage movement, informs – sometimes unintentionally – the evolution of radio programming.
Even better, at the heart of the tale is the love story between Frank and Flora, a constant despite being the epicenter of the radio revolution. Dance numbers between Frank and Flora, such as “Fire Hall Waltz” and “As We Dance on Air,” are captivating, especially when we witness Flora swept off her feet elegantly and seemingly effortlessly by her sweetheart.
Just as enjoyable are the dance numbers with the cast, such as “Roaring,” “A Little Further, Together,” and “I Wouldn’t Wish it on My Friend,” an especially fun duet between Agnes and Flora. “8XK” was exceptionally well performed: a high-energy number by the ensemble as they celebrate their success and recognition.
Dandridge displays her vocal range in a beautifully sung acapella ballad to Frank during his final moments. Baltimore similarly stands out, nailing her vocal and acting delivery every time.
Overall, On Air, directed by Todd D. Norris with music and lyrics by Matt Conner and book and lyrics by Stephen Gregory Smith, is an enjoyable and upbeat musical that will entertain the whole family. It is playing at Hanover Tavern through April 14. For showtimes and tickets, visit VirginiaRep.org.
