Every year on March 21st, people all over the world come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing bright, fun, silly socks.  The date is symbolic because people with Down syndrome have three copies of their twenty-first chromosome, and socks were chosen because the Ds chromosomes look like mismatched socks.

Virginia Down Syndrome Association has socks for sale for you to rock! Join local businesses, schools, and organizations to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by rocking your socks!

This year, VDSA has added Classroom Kits to our offerings to help teachers, PTAs/PTOs, parents, and loved ones teach students in Preschool through High School about Down syndrome awareness and inclusion. Classroom kits and socks will be available to order online from February 2nd, 2026 to March 2nd, 2026. Please visit virginiadsa.org for more information.

How Can I Participate?

  • Anyone can participate!  Whether you are an individual, family, small business, large organization, or school, you can purchase fun socks from VDSA.  You can then distribute them however you like!  Here are some fun ideas:
  • Businesses can purchase socks to give or sell to their employees to wear and have a fun, team-building day on March 21.
  • Organizations and businesses can purchase socks to sell at their location to patients, customers, or clients.
  • Schools can purchase socks and have their students create a fun contest for which classrooms have the most students wearing fun, silly socks!
  • Families can purchase socks to give to their hairdresser, mechanic, dentist, doctor, neighbors, etc.
  • Individuals can purchase socks to wear and bring awareness to this awesome day!
  • Families, businesses or individuals can sponsor a classroom kit to be used in a specific school or class.
