Amid Extreme Heat, Chesterfield Expanding Library Hours This Weekend

With extreme heat forecast for this weekend, Chesterfield is expanding library hours to serve residents who need a safe place to cool off indoors.

Temperatures as high as 102 degrees are expected in the county on Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23. All Chesterfield Public Library locations will be open until 6 p.m. on Saturday, and Ettrick-Matoaca, Central and North Courthouse Road libraries will be open on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Prolonged exposure to extreme heat poses many health risks, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To avoid heat-related illness, stay hydrated and take cooling, indoor breaks at least every 30 minutes if working outdoors.

Do not leave children or pets unattended outdoors or in vehicles, and check in on elderly neighbors, particularly those with limited air conditioning options.

If you don’t have access to a vehicle and need to travel around the county this weekend, consider Chesterfield’s Access On Demand program and GRTC to meet your transportation needs instead of walking.

Access on Demand assists qualifying county residents in securing private rides anywhere in Chesterfield for trips such as medical appointments, grocery shopping, or visits to family or friends.

GRTC, meanwhile, currently operates two full-service bus lines in Chesterfield: Route 1A along Midlothian Turnpike and Route 3B along the county’s Route 1 corridor.

GRTC also has established a new LINK microtransit service in Chesterfield that provides on-demand, point-to-point connections within the Clover Dale Zone.
