The Science Museum has a long tradition of creating holiday-themed content and activities. It is another way for the organization to remind Virginians that science is all around them, and highlight ways we are all connected to STEM. Plus, it’s fun for both staff and guests!

For science lovers looking for a frighteningly good time, the Science Museum of Virginia is celebrating Halloween with science fun the last weekend of the month.

  • Ghostly Galleries: Educators perform spine-tingling science experiments, including spooky spiders, boo bubbles, radical reactions, and organ dissections.
  • Frightful Forge: Guests can make Dr. Frankenstein proud with create-your-own toy monsters. Attendees may supply their own toys for destruction/reconstruction or choose from an assortment available to workshop participants on a first come, first served basis.
  • “Phantom of the Universe”: Space isn’t spooky—or is it?! Guests can unlock the mysteries of dark matter in a special showing of this planetarium show on the 76-foot Dome screen.
  • Scary-fast Speed: Guests will be spooked by the hauntingly powerful vehicles featured in the touring exhibition Hot Wheels™: Race to Win™.
  • Bat Bargain: To celebrate the last two days of Bat Week, anyone whose first or last name matches the caped crusader’s name (Bruce or Wayne will be accepted) will receive free admission.

Curious-minded guests of all ages are invited to enjoy the in-Museum activities. Science lovers who can’t visit in person but want to join in the fun can find Halloween-themed content and activities* posted on the Science Museum’s blog, website, and social media pages.

Guests are invited to wear family-friendly costumes that adhere to the Science Museum’s mask policy. Members who wear a costume will receive an extra 10 percent off on gift shop purchases. Guests with the first or last name Bruce or Wayne must show identification to receive free admission during Bat Week.

All activities except films in Dome feature are included with Science Museum admission. “Phantom of the Universe” requires an additional ticket. The Science Museum offers discounts for military, teachers, and EBT cardholders. Guests should call 804.864.1400 for details about reserving tickets with the discount code.

Registration is required for Forge workshops. Each workshop is limited to 20 guests ages 8 and up. Workshops can be added through the Science Museum’s website after purchasing admission tickets or in-person at Guest Services if space allows.
