In 2015, the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia was honored to be selected as a recipient of the inaugural Richmond Christmas Mother Fund. That generous gift sparked something that would become a Christmas tradition, and for hundreds of fathers and their families, a moment they would never forget.
FATHER Christmas was created to recognize dads who were facing hardship but often fell through the cracks of other assistance programs and went unrecognized. These are fathers working two jobs, fathers who have fallen on hard times, fathers facing illness or unexpected expenses, and fathers who simply need a little help making Christmas special for their children.
Eleven years later, FATHER Christmas is still going strong.
The concept is simple. Someone who knows a deserving dad nominates him. It can be a wife, former partner, family member, friend, coworker, or anyone who has seen that father working hard to provide for and care for his family. A committee reviews the nominations and selects the dads who will be honored.
What happens next is anything but ordinary.
Helping Families Have Merrier Holidays
That first year, ten unsuspecting dads were invited to The Jefferson Hotel for a special Christmas banquet. Each received a $100 gift card, along with gift certificates for an oil change, a car wash, and a haircut. But the most meaningful part of the evening wasn’t what they received. It was hearing why someone had nominated them.
They learned that someone had noticed their sacrifice. Someone had seen the way they showed up for their children. Someone believed they deserved to be recognized. The program quickly grew. Within four years, the number of fathers honored increased from ten to twenty-five. And the stories became unforgettable.
There was a father who was legally blind yet continued caring for his children and his wife. A father whose family had lost everything in a fire. A father battling cancer while continuing to work hard to provide for his family. And a father who had his heat cut off, set up a tent in his living room, and slept alongside his children to keep them warm through the winter. These weren’t stories about perfect circumstances. They were stories about fathers who kept showing up.
During the fourth annual FATHER Christmas program, a board member suggested surprising one dad with $500. After the event, that father shared what the unexpected gift would mean for his family and how it would immediately improve their quality of life. The Foundation team knew something had changed. A gift wasn’t simply a gift. It could mean the lights come back on. It could mean groceries. It could mean a repaired car, a warm home, or a little breathing room for a father who had been carrying an enormous burden. Thus, the FATHER Christmas gift was increased.
Keeping the Christmas Spirit Alive
In 2019, the program entered its fifth year and moved from The Jefferson to a new location, inviting the families for a dinner, not knowing that Dad was getting recognized. That year, ten dads received $500 in cash, gift cards, and a meal for their families.
Then the pandemic arrived.
The Foundation could have paused the program. Instead, it found a new way to bring Christmas to families. A drive-through Christmas experience was created. Families stayed safely in their cars. First came hot chocolate and cookies. Then came Santa. After Santa spent time with the children, the attention turned to Dad. Santa would share the story of why the father had been nominated and place $500 directly into his hands. Next came Santa’s Workshop, where volunteers filled the family’s car with Christmas presents based on a children’s wish list secretly provided by the nominator. The final stop was a takeout dinner for the family to enjoy safely at home. The entire experience lasted only five or ten minutes for each family, but those few minutes created memories that would last a lifetime.
One of the most unforgettable visits involved a little girl battling cancer. She was thrilled to see Santa, but a tracheotomy prevented her from speaking. Her father was dealing with complications from COVID-19 while medical bills continued to pile up.
In February of the next year, her family sent a simple message: FATHER Christmas had helped give them the best Christmas they could have with their little girl. Unfortunately, it was her last. She may have lost her battle, but the memories of that Christmas will last forever. That is why this program matters.
It isn’t only about $500. It isn’t only about presents. It is about giving a father the dignity of providing for his children when times are hard and reminding him that someone sees how hard he is trying.
One year, FATHER Christmas provided another extraordinary surprise when a father who had been seriously injured in a car crash and whose wife had died received a car through the program.
Eleven Years of Making a Difference
Over the past eleven years, the Fatherhood Foundation of Virginia has honored over 260 fathers, provided Christmas presents for more than 500 children, given cars to two dads, and distributed more than $90,000 directly to deserving fathers. And the tradition continues.
This year, 25 dads in Greater Richmond and surrounding counties, 25 dads in Hampton Roads, and 25 dads in the Blue Ridge region will receive a visit from Santa, Christmas presents for their children, and $500 in direct assistance. Every one of those fathers will have a story, every one will have someone who believes he deserves to be recognized, and every one will hear the message at the heart of FATHER Christmas:
You are seen. You are appreciated. You are loved. And what you do for your family matters.
