JES Collects Worn, Tattered American Flags in Honor of Flag Day

Boy Scout Troop 362 will Properly Retire Flags during Special Ceremony

JES, the region’s leading foundation repair, moisture management and waterproofing company is accepting worn, tattered and faded flags for proper retirement in honor of Flag Day on June 14th. The flags will be retired by a local Boy Scout Troop during a flag retirement ceremony in the Fall.

The flag retirement the ceremony involves a Color Guard which brings the troops to attention and then recites the poem “Hello, Remember Me?” The troops salute the flag as it’s retired in a controlled campfire.

According to Chapter 10, Section 176 of the United States Code: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably burning.”

Veteran organizations, the Girls Scouts and the Boy Scouts all have their own ceremonial renditions for retiring the American flag. However, according to Bob Fletcher and Dave Timmerman, Scoutmasters for Virginia Beach Troop 362, the most important and common aspect of all these ceremonies is “respect” for the flags being retired. Fletcher also states, “It is important to explain to younger children that a flag being burned by a demonstrator is different than one being retired with honor and dignity.”

American flags will be collected from May 1, 2013 through June 30, 2013 from 8 AM – 5 PM Monday thru Friday.
