Major Growth with $3 Million Gift to Powhatan Private School

Major improvements continue to unfold at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School (BSH) in Powhatan. In 2019-2020 more than $2 million was donated by the Brower family for infrastructure and technology upgrades that inspired a revitalized energy and direction for the school.  This vision is gaining momentum.

Since 2019, and with completion of more than 50 different enhancement initiatives, enrollment at BSH has increased by 35% and there are now 366 students in Powhatan County’s only Pre-K through Grade 12 private school. BSH continues to successfully navigate through COVID challenges with in-school instruction and continues to uphold a 20-year tradition whereby 100% of its graduates are accepted to a four-year university or college.  Additionally, the 2021 varsity football team won the Division 2 VISL State Championships.

On January  26th at a meeting for more than 250 parents, BSH announced the receipt of a second major gift from the Brower family, this one for more than $3 million. This gift will support the next phase of growth at BSH which includes the implementation of a broad-based dual enrollment program being developed in conjunction with local colleges to offer college-level credits for juniors and seniors in four different disciplines. Other initiatives in this next growth phase at BSH include money for faculty development/retention programs, curriculum and technology upgrades as well as significant infrastructure upgrades throughout the 40-acre campus.  Architectural plans were shared for the construction of a new Upper School Creative Arts Center, a million-dollar renovation of the current multi-purpose center to include updated athletic facilities and a state-of-the-art STEAM lab (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture and Math), a complete renovation of the Library, a major overhaul of the main gymnasium and installation of LED lighting, new flooring and painting for 34 classrooms.

“This incredible gift brings to life what were once dreams and possibilities. There is no doubt about the future of BSH being stronger than ever and I’m excited for our students to experience the benefits and opportunities that await.” Paula Ledbetter, M. Ed., Head of School

“I’m so excited about the upcoming improvements to our school.  The addition of dual enrollment classes in high school will be a great asset to the students. The renovations to the classrooms and other facilities will only enhance the beauty of our campus.”  Tracy Allen, BSH parent

Sue Hickey, the Director for Development at BSH, advised that “Major renovations and ground-breaking are scheduled to begin in May for completion by the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.  It will be a busy summer at BSH.” Ms. Hickey also stated.

A third wave of projects is scheduled to be kicked off this spring with a capital campaign that will generate additional matching funds from the Brower family and the Catholic Diocese of Richmond through its recently launched Learn to Lead Campaign that seeks to help strengthen all Catholic Schools throughout their system. We invite you to tour BSH on-line or schedule an in-person visit to explore our growing campus.
