National Federation of Press Women Announces National Award Winners
Communicators from throughout the United States were honored June 25, 2022, during the National Federation of Press Women communications contest ceremony in Fargo, North Dakota. Nearly 2,000 entries were submitted in this year’s contest including entries from forty-five states and Washington, D.C.
Karen Schwartzkopf, managing editor of Richmond Family Magazine (RFM), claimed first place nationally for editing of a print publication (magazine or magapaper/tabloid) in 2021. Schwartzkopf is managing editor of RFM and has served in that role for the free lifestyle magazine, since it was founded by Margaret Thompson in October 2009.
Joan Tupponce, who has been a featured contributor to RFM since its founding, placed first, second, and third in the National Federation of Press Women contest. Her article about early education, which appeared in the August 2021 issue of RFM, received second place. Just Joan: RVA Storyteller, a collection of online exclusives essays at RFMonline.com which is written by Tupponce, placed third in the general columns category. Tupponce received a first place commendation for a personally profile (longer than 500 words) she wrote for a VCU publication.
NFPW is a nationwide organization of women and men pursuing careers across the communications spectrum, including print and electronic journalism, freelancing, new media, books, public relations, marketing, graphic design, photography, advertising, radio, and television.
A distinguished group of professional journalists, communications specialists, and educators judged nearly 2,000 entries in a wide variety of categories. Only first-place winning entries at the state level are eligible to enter the national contest. All entries were published or broadcast between Jan. 1, 2021, and Dec. 31, 2021.
