Summertime in Virginia Beach

A New Acrobatic Show, Cool Contemporary Art Exhibits and Outdoor Activities Dot the Calendar in Virginia Beach This Summer

The Famed East Coast Resort City Offers Fun in the Sun and a Taste of Cultural Arts

Summertime in Virginia Beach is all about the sun’s warm rays, relaxing with your feet in the sand, experiencing outdoor activities, enjoying festivals and relishing the amazing flavors of coastal cuisine. Every seat is a good one at the all-new acrobatic show, Cirquesa Dreamquest; test your endurance with stand-up paddleboarding while gazing at a perfect sunset over the Chesapeake Bay, or check out the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art’s summer exhibits including a tarot deck display. The following story ideas are centered on Virginia Beach’s summer attractions, events and travel options. For information and images, visit www.VisitVirginiaBeach.com/pressroom. To request a press visit or for more information, please contact Kari Journigan at kjournigan@boomyourbrand.com.

Experience the Fantastical World of Cirquesa, Virginia Beach’s Newest Summer Attraction: Visitors will be immersed in the excitement of Cirquesa Dreamquest, a two-hour extravaganza which features a childhood magical journey told through high-level aerial acts, acrobatics and breathtaking displays of theatrics. The show is held in three large Italian-style tents on Atlantic Avenue and 3rd Street near Rudee Inlet with seating for up to 1,000 people. Shows throughout the summer will run Tuesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. A matinee will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays and a 2 p.m. show will be offered on Thursdays and Sundays. Prices range from $24.95 to $45.95 for adults and $12.95 to $19.95 for children, based on the location of seating. Military personnel will receive a $4 discount. To purchase tickets or for additional information on the show, visit www.cirquesavb.com.

Ponder the Interpretation of New Exhibits at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art: From May 30th to August 18th, three new exhibits will be open at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). Contemporary Magic: A Tarot Deck Art Project assigned some of today’s most significant artists and designers a tarot card which when assembled make an entire deck rated the #2 must-see exhibit of the season by the Huffington Post. Some of the featured artists in the tarot deck include Kehinde Wiley and Marc Jacobs, among others, who used painting, drawing, collage and photography to interpret the assignment. Visitors can also explore the renowned sculptor, Brian Dettmer, who uses outdated, mass produced books as the medium for his craft. Or, watch a dream-like, open-ended narrative that is both eerie and beautiful to behold in the film Night Hunter. Artist Stacey Steers stitched together images of early silent film actress Lillian Gish with 18th century engravings to create over 4,000 hand-made collages for the film. For more information on MOCA, visit www.virginiamoca.org.

Experience the Outdoors with False Cape Escapes and Sunset Paddles: Surf and Adventure’s False Cape Escapes returns for its second season. The retreat begins at 8:30 a.m. with a tram ride on the Blue Goose Express that takes you through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park to the beach where participants will find stations of stand-up paddleboards and surfboards, a yoga instructor and a massage therapist – all with the beautiful backdrop of False Cape’s undeveloped beach. Before departing around mid-afternoon, you will refuel for the ride back to Sandbridge with a box lunch from Back Bay Gourmet. Scheduled trips for this summer are set for June 22, July 13, 27 and August 10. Visit Surf and Adventure at www.surfandadventure.com to reserve your spot.

For those who love watching a perfect sunset on the water, enjoy a Sunset Paddle every Thursday night from 7 p.m. until the sun drops below the horizon, offered by Tula Adventure Sports on the beach, bayside in front of Tradewinds Bar & Restaurant at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel & Conference Center. Bring your own board and stand-up paddle for free, or rent one for $25. Afterwards, enjoy a DJ, dinner buffet for $10 and $5 Sunset Paddle Punch on the deck of Tradewinds. For more information on Sunset Paddles, visit www.tulasports.com or call the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel & Conference Center at 757-481-9000.

First Landing State Park Gets New Pier and Floating Dock: First Landing State Park, the most visited park in Virginia, offers visitors 1.25 miles of beach front and more than 19 miles of interpretive hiking trails through protected salt marsh habitat, freshwater ponds, beach, dunes, forest, tidal marsh and cypress swamp. Now, the city is adding a fixed pier and a floating dock in the tidal water at the end of the park’s 64th Street entrance, in an area known as the Narrows. The dock will be useful to recreational boaters who want to tie up to drop off passengers or use the park’s restrooms. For those who like to paddle, it will serve as a steady launch location for canoes, kayaks and paddleboards. The construction of the pier and floating dock began on May 1 and the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of June. For more information on the new pier and floating dock, please visit www.vbgov.com.

Virginia Beach entices visitors to “Live the Life” year-round!
