In honor of National Thrift Shop Day, Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia (Goodwill) wants residents to consider the benefits of shopping at thrift shops. At Goodwill, not only are Virginians saving money while shopping second-hand, but they are also helping keep items out of landfill and providing job opportunities.
“For the last century, Goodwill’s mission has remained one of service to our communities by providing employment and training opportunities to individuals with disabilities or circumstances that would have likely limited success or advancement in other work settings,” Goodwill President and CEO Mark Barth said. “Our thrift stores are the frontline of this mission while focusing on sustainability by collecting and selling donated goods which reduces the volume of materials that end up in landfills.”
Goodwill Incentives for National Thrift Shop Day 2023 (check back for 2024 info):
- Each of the 39 retail, outlet and e-recycle locations in central and coastal Virginia will have one golden gift card of a $25 value hidden in the store (available when stores open).

In 2022, Goodwill’s salvage and recycling operations kept nearly 25 million pounds of materials out of area landfills. Additionally, Goodwill’s career advisors worked one-on-one with more than 120 associates through its Grow@Home program and over 270 individuals participated in the Supported Employment program across 72 unique employers in Virginia.
By shopping or donating at Goodwill in honor of National Thrift Shop Day, community members will become part of this positive sustainability focus while supporting this important local nonprofit’s mission to “help people help themselves through the power of work.”
