This February, VPM presents 28 Days of Black History Month, a new digital gallery spotlighting some of the lesser known heroes of American history. The project will span the month of February, with a new hero added each day, along with colorful graphics that readers can share on social media.
Many of the individuals featured in “28 Days of Black History Month” have ties to Virginia. Among those on the list are architect Ethel Bailey Furman, civil rights lawyer and politician Henry L. Marsh III, mathematician Dr. Gladys B. West, World War II fighter pilot Lt. Col. Howard L. Baugh, educator Virginia E. Randolph, NFL Hall of Famer Willie Lanier, and civil and women’s rights activist Dorothy Height.
Richmond-area public historian Elvatrice “Elva” Belsches serves as historical consultant on the project, and the project will direct viewers to an array of local resources and links for further reading.

For early learners, VPM is offering a companion Black hero poster design contest for kids in pre-K through second grade. The winner will receive a PBS KIDS Playtime Pad. The deadline for entries is March 7, 2021.
