Best wishes for a fabulous school year

Or in my son’s case, heading off for the first time! This is where I should wax poetic about the tearful (mine, not theirs) good-byes from the bus stop on the first day of school, but let’s face it – it’s still August in the land of print-needs-time-to-be-printed, and although I can fake a lot of things, the emotion that will surround the first day of kindergarten and second grade for my boys isn’t one of them.

So let’s keep it real, shall we? It’s mid-August as I pen my monthly note, and my family is tucked into bed, anxiously awaiting what tomorrow morning will bring. The Pathfinder is packed to the hilt, and at daybreak, we will head off for our official summer vacation to Hilton Head, South Carolina. It took some convincing to get my fellow beach-going pals to agree to the much-farther-than-we’veever- gone-before destination, but I just know they’ll love it once we finally arrive. We weren’t lucky enough to get son number two into a waterproof cast in time for the trip, but we’re hopeful that a handy gizmo from Westbury Pharmacy might provide him the opportunity to splash around with the rest of us.

Before we headed home to finish packing today, the boys had the good fortune to tag along with me to a planning meeting for one of several fabulous events RFM is sponsoring in the coming months. That’s right, they got to hang out with none-other than the Diggity Dudes as we put some finishing touches on our plans to bring you the region’s only kids’ music festival, the third-annual DiggityFest! This one is shaping up to be the best yet, with six (count ‘em, six!) National acts from all over the East Coast coming to RVA to get your kids movin’ and groovin’ – and how fitting that movin’ mania is the presenting sponsor! We’re working hard to raise lots of money for our friends at Connor’s Heroes who are doing some amazing things to help area kids conquer cancer. See page 21 for all the details, and stop by and say hi to us while you’re there!

Other than wiggling and giggling, there are lots of other ways to give back while you get fit this month. We’ll be having fun at the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Superkid Obstacle Course on September 21, and cheering on the walkers and runners along the four mile course. A week later, we’ll be moving all over RVA, first on Brown’s Island at the Richmond Heart Walk, then at the Short Pump Mile, where some big money is up for grabs for area schools’ PE programs. But first, we’ll kick off that weekend at Harvesting the Grape, an evening of wine and fun benefitting The Hilliard House. Look for more information about all these events in this issue. If you think this month looks busy, wait until you see October.

It’s another great read, so before you get movin’, kick back and enjoy!
