It’s Summertime in RVA!

June greetings, readers! Whether you love it or hate it, summer arrives this month, in all its steamy glory. Our May reader poll showed that the majority of you are fans of summer, with its more laid-back attitude, relaxed bedtimes, and a break from homework and lunches to pack (yay!). Just over a quarter of you reported that while you do enjoy summer, it gets on your nerves, too, and that’s certainly understandable.

Your reader comments a few pages over perfectly captured my thoughts on the season, and reading through them reminded me that you and I are like-minded, you, our faithful fans. Whether it’s through our Facebook page, our Instagram or Twitter feeds, our reader poll comments, or coming up to visit us with kind words about RFM when we’re out in the community at events, your positive spirit shines through, and we love that. The older I get, the more I realize that surrounding yourself with positive energy and weeding out negativity is the key to happiness, and I want you to know that all of us at RFM are grateful for your positive energy and support throughout the years. Bringing you this resource is one of the great joys in our lives, so let’s dive in and figure out how we’re going to spend the summer of 2018!

As I type this, I am getting ready for a presentation for a Partners in Parenting workshop about the many fun things to do in Richmond. If you didn’t make it to this workshop, I would be happy to share it with you – just email me. Or, if you’d like me to come to your company, moms’ club, wherever, with my handy presentation, I’m happy to do it! And of course, all of these events will be on the RFM calendar all summer, too. Some of the highlights include:

• Free or $1 movies: From Robins Stadium at University of Richmond to Pocahontas State Park to the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds, there are lots of neat places to catch a flick this summer, and as always, there are also the Tuesday and Wednesday $1 movies at Regal and Bow Tie Cinemas.

• Library events: Summer reading is in full swing, and all of the area library systems have exciting programming (and prizes!) in store for families. Our friend Chris Campbell will entertain his way through the Henrico County and City of Richmond branches, and our pal Jesse Joyner will be juggling it up at the Pamunkey branches. And be sure to register for bingo at the City of Richmond libraries – there are big prizes for kids and adults up for grabs!

• History! Summer is a great time for those bucket list RVA outings. For me, I am determined to finally tour the State Capitol and watch the Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death reenactment at St. John’s Church. How about a visit to the Valentine? Their Music in the Garden Series is family-friendly, free, and includes free access to the Valentine’s exhibitions!

The choices are limitless – for indoor or outdoor fun in RVA this summer – so whether or not the summer temps are for you, RVA has you covered. We’ll keep you in the know with RFM and our weekly RFM eNews, the Insider, and together, we’ll enjoy a fantastic summer!
