Make decorating and gifting for the holidays extra special with these easy-to-make découpage ornaments. With some festive paper, glue, and an ornament base, you’ll be able to create ornaments for your tree or to give as gifts. Any decorative papers will do – wrapping paper, scrapbook paper, magazine pages, napkins with holiday designs, and more. It’s a great way to use up gift wrap scraps!
What you need:
- Ornament base
- Paint brush
- White craft paint
- Festive paper
- Foam brush
- Mod Podge (or equal parts school glue and water)
- Pencil
- Scissors
What you do:
- If desired, paint your ornament base with a solid color of craft paint and let dry fully. This allows the back and sides to look finished. If using napkins or thin papers, a white base on the front allows the design to pop.
- Using the ornament base as a template, trace the ornament’s shape onto the back of your patterned paper.
- Cut out the shape.
- Brush a thin, even layer of glue across the entire front surface of your ornament base.
- Carefully lay the paper down on top of the ornament, working from the middle out to avoid bubbles, completely covering the top. If oversized, push paper down to cover edges and/or trim excess. Let dry completely.
- When dry, cover top of decorative paper with one or two layers of store-bought or homemade Mod Podge to seal it and protect the paper.
- If necessary, use a pencil to punch a hole into the paper where the ornament hole is and insert string for hanging.
