For some families fall is synonymous with pumpkin patches, trick-or-treating, or hay rides. For my family, fall means finding the best hikes for us to take in the vibrant autumnal colors. Richmond has no shortage of kid-friendly hikes, but the ones on this list I specifically chose because they really show off the beauty of the fall season.
Dutch Gap Conservation Area
Hike or bike on these trails, which are adjacent to Henricus Historical Park. There are docks, benches, and this one of a kind tree for kids to climb. The docks give great views of fall colors across the water.

Leakes Mill Park
Start at the playground and wind your way to the trails which ultimately lead to water, and historical ruins. Pack a picnic and a change of clothes if your kiddos are likely to end up splashing in the creek.

High Bridge Trail State Park
My kids love to play under the former rail bed, where there’s water and sand. But, the most memorable part for me, is the actual “high bridge”, where there are lookouts along the way, as well as benches. This route is entirely stroller-friendly. Picnic tables are on either side of the bridge, so pack snacks and water. If you’re feeling energetic make a whole day of it in downtown Farmville – don’t forget to get a sundae at Walker’s Diner.
John J. Radcliffe Conservation Area
You could bike or walk through the trails, which have a stroller-friendly, packed sand surface. The water views are scenic and other than a few fishermen, you are likely to have the entire place to yourself. Warning: No bathrooms, so plan ahead!
Maymont
I know Maymont is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you think “hike,” but consider walking from the Italian Gardens to the waterfall. Doing this with kiddos in tow, certainly qualifies as a hike to me.

And, with all the colorful leaves surrounding you, it’s easy to appreciate how lucky we are to live here!
