Just the words “summer camp” bring back happy memories. Long, sunny days spent splashing in the pool, making arts and crafts, going on nature hikes and roasting marshmallows. And the wonderful friendships made along the way.
At SOAR365’s Summer Camp at Camp Baker, kids and adults with disabilities can have an adventure of their very own.
Nature & Activities
Set on 22 acres of woodlands in Chesterfield, Camp Baker has been home to SOAR365’s Summer Camp since 1954. This lush, green location is perfect for traditional summer camp activities, like tent camping, fishing, horseback riding, and paddle boating. It also features a swimming pool and plenty of space for dance parties and talent shows.
With a little extra support, everyone gets to join in the fun! Like brothers Samuel and Harper, as well as their friend, Aidon Blake, who each have autism.
Samuel loves horseback riding and exploring nature. Harper enjoys photography and arts and crafts. And Aidon Blake loves the water – whether swimming in the pool or paddle boating. Summer Camp has something for everyone.
At Camp Baker, campers with different backgrounds, disabilities and communication styles all come together to have a great time. As Aidon Blake, shared, “One of my friends doesn’t talk, but we still have fun!”
Summer Camp staff also encourage campers to try new activities, which helps them learn and grow.
Staff & Facilities
SOAR365’s Summer Camp counselors come from all over the world, introducing campers to new cultures. Many are also being trained in disability-related fields. Summer Camp gives them a chance to learn in a hands-on environment and use the knowledge they’ve gained.
In fact, 11 different countries were represented on staff in 2024. Via online and in-person recruitment efforts, the nations of England, Scotland, Wales, Poland, Spain, Mexico, Colombia, Guatemala, Australia, New Zealand, and of course, the United States, all came together for an unforgettable summer.
“A lot of our campers have never met anyone from another country,” says Jessica Damm, a Summer Camp Supervisor from England. “Many of them like to try and copy our accents. They ask lots of questions, and it can be an educational moment for everyone.”
While the people who bring Summer Camp to life are at the forefront of everything we do, the wonderful facilities they work in have a crucial role in creating an environment where campers can thrive.
Thanks to generous contributions from our donors, Camp Baker recently received some truly impactful improvements. These include a wheelchair-accessible utility terrain vehicle, improved wheelchair access to the fire pit, and a peaceful sensory room.
The cabins and dining hall are specially designed with accessibility in mind, and SOAR365’s Summer Camp is fully accredited by the American Camp Association.
Care and Well-Being
Summer Camp staff ensure that each camper’s medical needs are met with the utmost care and attention. Trained medical professionals keep track of each camper’s medical history, allergies, medications, and any required accommodations. Nursing staff are also on hand for emergencies, so caregivers can relax and get the respite they deserve.
“Everything we do is person-centered,” says Tricia Puryear, Vice President of Human Services. “Sometimes a person’s needs are relatively simple and sometimes they can get quite complex. No matter what, we take them seriously. We know it can take a leap of faith to entrust us with your loved ones, and we want to earn that trust.”
And they do. In fact, nearly 98% of families surveyed said that SOAR365’s Summer Camp seeks to understand and meet the needs of their loved one and provides a safe environment.
