Traveling Exhibition Honors 15th Anniversary of ART 180

Guitar imagesGuitART! A “Case” for Music and Art celebrates artist-musicians in honor of ART 180’s 15th anniversary, and features original art on guitar case lids donated by TKL/Cedar Creek, makers of musical instrument cases. Fifteen professional artist-musicians — visual artists who are also known for their musical abilities (or vice versa) — and 15 young artist-musicians designed original art pieces using the donated case lids.

This traveling exhibition honors ART 180’s history of making the case that creative expression affords young people the opportunity to transform their lives and communities. In 1998 Marlene Paul and Kathleen Lane risked everything. They both took a major turn in their careers to focus time and energy on this new endeavor, ART 180. Over many meetings with community members all across Richmond, ART 180 was born.

Reflecting on the exhibition and anniversary, Marlene Paul, ART 180 Cofounder and Executive Director, says, “So many young people have expressed themselves creatively through ART 180 for the past 15 years, we want to honor them and our mission through this project. I’m enourmously proud of our work and grateful for the community of artists who are part of it. That’s worth celebrating.”

The exhibition is scheduled to make appearances over the next four months at the following confirmed locations, with other surprise appearances as they arise: September 6-October 28 at Atlas (ART 180’s teen center in Jackson Ward), 114 W. Marshall Street. The gallery is open weekdays and by appointment, and during First Fridays Art Walk in September and October (September 6 and October 4).Atlas will host the opening reception as part of the Fall Line Festival on September 6, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and October First Fridays 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM will include performances by various musicians featured in the exhibition; October 11-13 at the Richmond Folk Festival, and; December 5 at Art Karma, ART 180’s annual fundraiser at the Emerald Barn, 1620 Brook Road. There, the lids painted by adult artists will be auctioned off to benefit ART 180 programs.

ABOUT ART 180
ART 180 gives young people in challenging circumstances the chance to express themselves through art, and to share their stories with others. Since 1998, the nonprofit organization has worked with youth in the Richmond area to create art that explains and illustrates their feelings, thoughts, and experiences. Partnering with other organizations that serve young people, ART 180 designs projects that allow for self-expression, and creates venues for this expression in the community. The name reflects their vision of turning lives and communities around 180 degrees. ART 180 also operates Atlas, an art center for teens in Jackson Ward.
