A powerful novel of hope and forgiveness from a beloved author.
I’m typically one to choose titles for pure pleasure over anything too heavy, so I was torn when I saw the latest book from one of my favorite authors, Mitch Albom of Tuesdays with Morrie fame.
Set against the backdrop of the Holocaust and inspired by true events, The Little Liar is simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming. Even though I was hesitant, the premise, combined with Albom’s deeply moving narrative style, reeled me in, and I’m glad it did.
The story begins in a Greek coastal town with eleven-year-old Nico, who has a reputation for always telling the truth. When the family’s city is invaded by the Nazis, trustworthy Nico is discovered by a German officer, who takes him under his wing and puts him to work convincing Jews to board the trains to what he tells Nico is a safer place. Once Nico discovers the massive lie he has told to so many, including members of his own family, he never tells the truth again.
With the narrator Albom has designated as Truth itself, the author follows four characters who have experienced the Holocaust in very different ways. For years, Nico hides and lies, setting off a chain of events that impacts his brother Sebastian, their childhood friend Fanni, and the Nazi who manipulated Nico when he was a young boy. The story covers several decades and crosses the Atlantic to America, where Holocaust survivors Nico and Fanni, as well as the Nazi officer, have relocated in an attempt to escape the memories of that horrendous time.
Albom’s storytelling prowess shines through as he weaves a haunting tale of historic fiction with these richly developed characters, each with their own struggles and triumphs, making them feel incredibly real and relatable. He effortlessly tackles themes of survival, devotion, forgiveness, and redemption. The book’s message about the importance of honesty and the impact of our choices resonates long after the final page is turned. Whether you’ve never read a title by Mitch Albom or are a true fan like me, The Little Liar is not to be missed.
