Looking for a family event where kids can explore, engage, and just be themselves? The Autism Society of Central Virginia’s 5K & Family Fun Day is designed with that in mind. It’s sensory-friendly, hands-on, and welcoming for all families.
It’s also a meaningful starting point for families who are newly navigating an autism diagnosis. It offers a chance to connect with resources, meet other families, and experience the kind of community that makes a difference.
On May 16, North Shore Commons in Innsbrook will transform into a vibrant gathering place as more than 1,200 attendees come together for the 24th Annual ASCV 5K & Family Fun Day, presented by Shamin Hotels.
“The day is more than a race. It’s a place for our community to come together, find connection, and feel supported,” says Executive Director Ann Flippin.
More than 65 teams of families, companies, and community organizations have spent the past several months fundraising and building momentum toward the event, helping drive toward a $200,000 goal. The day celebrates those efforts and the community behind them.
A Day Full of Things to Do

Families can start the morning with a 5K run or walk around Innsbrook’s lake, or choose the new 1-mile option, which is a great fit for younger kids or those looking for a shorter route. After that, the day opens up into a full festival experience.
The event features a Resource Fair and Safety Fair, where families can meet local providers, explore services, and gather helpful information in one place. It’s a chance to ask questions, make connections, and walk away with real, practical resources.
There’s also plenty for kids to jump into, including a bouncy slide, obstacle course, photo booth, and interactive activities throughout the event. Special guests like costumed Princesses and ASCV’s beloved Waddles add to the fun.
Two sensory-friendly zones, hosted by Mosaic Pediatric Therapy and Brighter Strides ABA, provide space for play, movement, or a quiet break when needed.
Ros Runner from 12 On Your Side will serve as emcee, bringing energy and fun to the day’s program.
A Team That Brings People Together

One team you’ll see out on the course is Team Double Trouble, led by Terry Stevens and her twins. This year marks their fourth year participating, growing from a small group of five in 2023 into a team that brings together friends and family in a big way.
“The 5K is so important to our family because it’s the one event where we can bring our friends and family out to experience what ASCV does,” she shares. “Everyone gets to see and feel the love and joy we feel whenever we attend an ASCV event.”
It’s also a moment that centers her sons in a meaningful way. “It’s the one time each year where our friends and family are all there to celebrate and support the boys.”
On race day, Team Double Trouble leans into their theme—“With the ASCV our Future is looking BRIGHT!”—with bright neon outfits and plenty of energy. Terry’s twins ride along the course in their stroller, taking in everything around them, then head out to explore the activities afterward. A favorite moment last year was running through the Flagstop Car Wash station along the route.
For families who are new, Terry sees the event as an easy and welcoming place to start. “There’s so much to see and do, and you really get a feel for what ASCV is and the community it creates.”
Supporting Families Across Central Virginia

At the heart of the event is ASCV’s mission to support, empower, and build connections within the autism community. Through programs, events, and resources, ASCV helps families find community and feel supported at every stage.
As the need for services continues to grow, the funds raised from the 5K help sustain and expand programs that serve families across Central Virginia.
Join the Autism Society of Central Virginia on May 16 at North Shore Commons in Innsbrook for a day of connection, community, and family fun.
