For families in Richmond’s East End, finding high quality out-of-school programs that provide both academic and personal enrichment can be a challenge. In a community where economic disparities often limit access to extracurricular opportunities, free programming like that offered by Peter Paul RVA is not just helpful, it’s essential.

Zuri Melvin has seen this firsthand. She’s lived in the East End for most of her life. She and her extended family, a blended household of six children, their aunt, grandmother, and mother (her sister), were introduced to Peter Paul through Bellevue Elementary School. Over the years, programs like Peter Paul’s After School Academy and Summer Promise Academy have become a cornerstone of their lives, offering academic assistance and exposure to new experiences that they otherwise would not have access to.

Three of the children are currently enrolled in Peter Paul’s programs, and the impact has been profound. “What initially drew us to Peter Paul was the strong sense of community,” says Melvin. “It’s a safe, enriching environment that gives our children opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have.”

Peter Paul currently serves 135 students, a 30% increase over last year, reflecting the growing demand for quality out-of-school and summer programming. The need continues to rise, with 94 students currently on the waitlist. Additionally, Peter Paul has doubled its middle and high school population to 44 students last year, ensuring that older students have continued access to academic support and resources that prepare them for the future.

“Without Peter Paul, my family and many others would struggle to find safe, engaging spaces where children can learn and grow outside of school,” Melvin shares. “It’s more than just a program, it’s a vital resource for our community.”

Beyond academics, Peter Paul offers enrichment programs that help children develop confidence and social skills. Through partnerships with organizations like Music Orchard Richmond, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, and VCU’s Mary and Frances Youth Center, students are introduced to new interests and career pathways, expanding their horizons in ways they never imagined.

Peter Paul also recognizes the importance of engaging the whole family. The organization hosts quarterly events to connect families with essential services, creating a stronger community network. Through a partnership with FeedMore, Peter Paul also provides food distribution twice a month for neighborhood residents, ensuring families have access to nutritious meals. The impact extends to older residents as well, with programming twice a week for adults ages 61 and older in the community.

Since joining Peter Paul, Melvin’s children have developed greater confidence and independence. The program has encouraged them to explore different interests and build friendships in a nurturing environment. “The girls have become more outgoing. They’ve made new friends, explored different hobbies, and gained a sense of belonging that extends beyond their school environment,” she says.

Peter Paul ensures that families like Melvin’s always have someone to turn to. “Peter Paul isn’t just about academics, it’s about community,” Melvin explains. “They genuinely care about our children’s well-being and success.”
