FACT: An aluminum can recycled today is back on shelves as a new can within sixty days.
FACT: Recycling a single can saves enough energy to power a TV for three hours. ONE MORE FACT: Aluminum is endlessly recyclable.
These are the marvels worth celebrating on America Recycles Day, November 15. It’s a time for educating and empowering each other to recycle more and recycle right.
Join CVWMA on November 15 for Special Event
Central Virginia Waste Management Authority will partner with Hardywood Park Craft Brewery for a fun and informational event November 15, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at Hardywood West Creek. Come for games, recycled schwag and an opportunity to learn about Hardywood’s plan to switch all its products to easy-to-recycle aluminum cans.
CVWMA coordinates recycling programs for thirteen member jurisdictions. Programs range from curbside and drop-off recycling to special programs for electronics, tires, household hazardous waste and more.
The goal is to create a circular journey for waste and lighten the load on landfills.
Recycling is Real and Important
Recycling gives new life to materials that would otherwise spend eternity in a trash heap.
“Plus, the less we send to landfills, the more we can keep trash costs in check,” said CVWMA Executive Director Kimberly A. Hynes.
Hynes has a message for anyone who’s on the fence about recycling.
“Please don’t let valuable materials go to waste,” she said. “Our recycling helps fuel local, state and national economies, to the tune of more than $38 billion in wages. Let’s support recycling everywhere possible.”

Hardywood, the largest independently owned craft brewery in Virginia, recently announced plans to phase out glass bottles by the end of the year. The switch to aluminum cans reflects the company’s sustainability goals.
“The various bottles we have utilized in our nearly twelve years have all played a meaningful role in the evolution of the Hardywood brand,” Hardywood co-founder and CEO Eric McKay said. “But as we listen closely to what our customers want, and what best aligns with our core values, we couldn’t be more excited about the shift to cans to protect the environment by offering infinite recyclability and reducing the use of natural resources in transport and storage.”
