WCVE Richmond Public Radio has announced that political reporter Craig Carper will be its new News Director. Craig has served as WCVE’s Capitol Correspondent since 2009, during which he filed reports for daily newscasts, created in-depth feature stories during General Assembly sessions and at other times, and produced full-length forum programs that addressed political issues and community interests. Carper was also the host of the Capitol Events television news series broadcast during the General Assembly on WCVE PBS.
Craig has generated numerous pieces broadcast nationwide by NPR, including several stories on the trial of former Governor Bob McDonnell. He was an on-camera analyst during the course of the trial for PBS NewsHour and other national news outlets. In addition, Carper is an experienced moderator and panelist for political candidate forums.
“Craig has quickly developed a reputation as a State Capitol insider with knowledge and expertise of the General Assembly that will enable our station to continue strengthening its role as a leader in coverage of the legislature and state government,” says Bill Miller, VP & General Manager for WCVE Public Radio. “He has also helped establish our station’s name as the chief provider of news from the Commonwealth to national audiences through his contributions to NPR newscasts.”
Craig has a degree in Mass Communications and Print Journalism from Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to joining the WCVE News operation, he was Assistant Producer/Videographer at the WCVE State Capitol Bureau. Carper has held the titles of President, Vice President, and Treasurer for the Virginia Capitol Correspondents Association.
WCVE’s former News Director Wayne Farrar retired in June after almost 20 years with the station.
