The Firehouse Theatre is delighted to announce the upcoming production of Peter and the Starcatcher. The hilarious Tony Award-winning play with music opens on Friday, August 16th, 2024, on the Carol Piersol Stage at the Firehouse Theatre, 1609 West Broad Street. Peter and the Starcatcher will have two pay-what-you-will preview performances on Wednesday, August 14 and Thursday, August 15, and will run through Sunday, September 1, 2024.
Peter and the Starcatcher is as a prequel to the timeless tale of the Boy Who Would Not Grow Up. This whimsical adventure delves into themes of greed and despair, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship, duty, and love, set against a backdrop of marauding pirates. With a cast of twelve actors bringing dozens of unforgettable characters to life, Peter and the Starcatcher dazzles with boundless imagination, whisking you away to a Neverland like no other.
The book for Peter and the Starcatcher was written by Rick Elice. Broadway credits include The Cher Show, Jersey Boys (with Marshall Brickman, Bob Gaudio, Bob Crewe; directed by Des McAnuff: Tony Award, Best Musical); and The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, Andrew Lippa; directed by Jerry Zaks). The music was written by Wayne Barker, who won a Drama Desk Award for Best Music in a Play for Peter and the Starcatcher. Broadway credits include Dame Edna: Back With a Vengeance (composer, co-lyricist with Barry Humphries).
Nathaniel Shaw, producing artistic director for the Firehouse Theatre, will direct. He was the Founding Artistic Director for The New Theatre, served as Artistic Director for Virginia Repertory Theatre, and was the founding Artistic Director for The Active Theater (NYC). He was the inaugural New Play Development Director for Glass Half Full Productions, Tony and Olivier Award Winning Producers of Betrayal and was an Associate Choreographer for Once, supervising both the Broadway production and the First National Tour. Richmond directing credits include the world premiere of Memories of Overdevelopment and the US premiere of The Barber Of Moville at Firehouse (Richmond Theatre Community Circle Award for
Outstanding Original Work), Peter and the Starcatcher, the world premiere of The End of War (winner of 4 RTCC Awards), the world premiere of River Ditty (in collaboration with Glass Half Full Productions), In The Heights starring Arielle Jacobs with Choreography by Karla Garcia (winner of 5 RTCC Awards including Best Direction), West Side Story (RTCC Award for Best Musical), The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time, The 39 Steps, and Once(Co-Produced with The Fulton Theatre).
Family Musical Opens Aug 16 at Firehouse Theatre
The production stars Scott Wichmann as Black Stache, returning to the Firehouse stage for the first time since 2008’s award-winning production of Sam Shepard’s The Late Henry Moss. Other Firehouse credits include I Am My Own Wife, Kingdom of Earth, Where’s My Money, The Secret of Madame Bonnard’s Bath, Lombardi, and Bat Boy: The Musical! Recent credits include Sweeney Todd (Virginia Arts Festival); The Three Musketeers, Fiddler on the Roof (Virginia Stage Company); and Catch Me If You Can (Virginia Musical Theatre). Wichmann and Shaw are collaborating again on Peter and the Starcatcher, having worked together on the 2015 Virginia Repertory Theatre production.
The cast also stars Shannon Schilstra as Molly and Lukas D’Errico as Boy. Rounding out the twelve person ensemble will be Madison Hatfield, August Hundley, Paul Major, Elle Meerovich, Chewie Lo Moore, Joshua Mullins, Alexander Sapp, Robert Throckmorton, and William Vaughn.
The Peter and the Starcatcher creative team includes Kim Fox who will be musical directing the piece. The design team includes scenic/projection designer Chase Kniffen and lighting designer BJ Wilkinson. Grace Brown LaBelle will sound design, Kasey Brown will design costumes, Erica Hughes will serve as dialect coach, Steve Raybould is percussionist, and Tim Moehring will design props. Fifteen % off is available to active duty military and veterans. Pay-what-you-will performances will be offered for both preview performances, as well as all matinees (excluding closing show, September 1).
