Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies, a regional, magnet, public high school for gifted high school students has been named the element best public high school in America by TheBestSchools.org.

TheBestSchools.org is an independent organization comprised of a dedicated group of educators who believe learning transforms lives for the better and should remain a lifelong pursuit. Editors at TheBestSchools.org know the academic world inside out, with some holding Ph.D.’s and having extensive experience in teaching, research, and publishing at the university level.

The best public high schools serve all students for a wide range of life paths. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the United States has more than 24,000 public secondary schools; based on their research the huge list includes many exceptional public high schools.

With nearly a million page views a month, TheBestSchools.org is a leading resource for prospective students seeking a degree program or following news within higher education. Many U.S.-based universities cite the rankings and news articles, including Auburn, Texas A&M, and Fordham.

Maggie Walker High School draws students from Charles City, Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Hopewell, King and Queen, New Kent, Petersburg, Powhatan, Prince George, and Richmond.

The school’s mission includes the provision of comprehensive educational opportunities that advance gifted students’ understanding of world cultures and languages. While the school’s thematic focus is on government and international studies, its course content, teaching methods, and assessment strategies across all subject areas are crafted to meet the special needs of gifted students to fully develop their potential.

All MLWGS coursework offered is dual enrollment, advanced placement, or honors level. The school’s catalog includes twenty-two advanced placement courses and over thirty dual enrollment courses through a partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University. Numerous topics and seminar-style courses provide opportunities for intellectual discourse and creative problem-solving, and MLWGS’s unique mentorship program provides opportunities for one-on-one research experiences in a student’s field of interest.
