VHBG Dedicates Serenity Bridge In Memory of Former Resident

Virginia Home for Boys and Girls (VHBG) today unveiled its new Serenity Bridge. The Serenity Bridge was dedicated in the memory of a former VHBG youth who graduated, moved on to live independently and then took his own life almost a year later.

During his time at VHBG, “Jason” struggled to overcome the impact of severe childhood trauma. He lived on campus and worked with VHBG therapists to manage anger and depression and to fight addiction. He often sat on the unpainted wooden bridge to reflect on life and gain clarity.

IMG_20141013_140929585“This bridge is a special place of healing first recognized by “Jason” to whom we dedicate and remember in the preservation and beautification of this area,” said VHBG Clinical Supervisor Karen Rice. “Together, we often stood or sat on this bridge, talking about his past and future, his pain and his hope. I am honored today to memorialize him in the acknowledgement of this space as a healing place, and to thank him for inspiring those of us who knew him. May those who cross this bridge know and understand the peace when they are here.  This is his legacy.  He did and he does matter.”

Volunteers from the Department of Psychological Services for Henrico County Public Schools stained the bridge, cut back the surrounding bush and built stone steps leading to the bridge.

VHBG President Claiborne Mason untied a white ribbon during the dedication ceremony and guests in attendance walked across the bridge to symbolize moving toward healing.

The Serenity Bridge is adjacent to VHBG’s meditation area. Youth who live on campus or attend John G. Wood Alternative School (JGW) can use these areas to relax, meditate, or converse with their therapists.
