The Greater Richmond ARC provides afterschool care
for students with special needs in two locations
RICHMOND/CHESTERFIELD, Va. (Sept. 24, 2012) — Decorating pumpkins with yarn, markers, stickers, and other crafty materials is just one of the activities slated this fall for the Greater Richmond ARC’s afterschool program for schoolchildren with special needs (through age 21) held in two locations: ARCenter, 3600 Saunders Avenue in North Richmond, and Camp Baker, 7600 Beach Road in Chesterfield.
“Arts and crafts activities help with fine motor skills,” says Emily Lehmann, director of day support services at ARC, noting that activities at both ARCenter and Camp Baker include community outings, gardening, cooking, games and homework supervision. Participants also focus on life skills such as personal hygiene, health and safety.
Hours of operation for the afterschool program are weekdays 2 p.m.- 6 p.m., on early release days until 6 p.m., and on school holidays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The cost is $186.35 per school week, and $372.70 per week for summer/holidays. The program is a Medicaid MR Community-based Waiver provider.
The Greater Richmond ARC is licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. Camp Baker is also accredited by the American Camping Association. For more information, about the Greater Richmond ARC and its afterschool program, call (804) 358-1874.
