“What about the parents who don’t have as much energy as you?” My dear friend posed this question to me a few weeks ago. She’d been reading my column and scrolling through my Instagram page. With 4 kids ages 2-10, she said she loved my ideas, but she was just too tired to hike, visit a museum, or trek through a pumpkin patch.
I so appreciated the question, and the reality is I’ve been the tired Mom at various points in parenting, so I understand completely. Inspired by this question, I’ve created this list of activities that are planned for you, so you can just show up without tons of prep. Even better – you can do all these outings while sitting down! Save this list for when you’re tired, low on energy, and need to get out of the house but a hike just won’t work.
Catch a Movie at SMV’s Dome
I love Science Museum of Virginia’s Dome Theater because the movies are educational, and shorter than most movies you’d see in a regular movie theater. This makes it a great option for those with little ones who may not be able to sit for 2 hours but can make it for 45 minutes. You could also consider this training for going to a regular movie theater. Purchase tickets in advance.
Pack a Picnic
Get some Vitamin D without a strenuous workout by packing a picnic and heading to a local park. This is an easy way to get out of the house without too much planning required. If you want to make it easier, stop for food on the way to your picnic destination. My favorite picnic spot in RVA is Pocahontas State Park’s Bright Hope Butterfly Garden.
Let Your Light Shine
At Brown House Candle Company, you can make your own candle! Choose the scent and give it a name. I suggest this activity for ages 6+, but you know your child best. Keep in mind they will be pouring wax and around glass, so prep your child in advance. When you arrive, the staff takes you through the process step by step, so you can enjoy the activity.
Take ‘Em Out to the Ball Game
If watching sports entertains your kiddos, take them to a local event. Some suggestions from events my kids have loved: University of Richmond basketball or football, Flying Squirrels, Richmond Ivy or Kickers, Randolph-Macon College basketball. As far as being an “easy outing,” this is variable depending on your child’s age, how many snacks they’ll want to purchase, and if it’s their first sports event or they’ve been to many. Try these tips for Flying Squirrels games to make it easier!
Create a Keepsake
Visit a local pottery studio like CREATE Pottery Shop in Midlothian choose a piece of pottery to paint. Consider this a two-in-one outing if you gift the finished product to a grandparent or family member. An activity that keeps the kids busy, plus a holiday gift?! Efficient and fun! Plus, you don’t need to go overboard directing your child how to paint since this will be something to memorialize this stage, not a perfect museum piece.
Hopefully this list gives you some ideas for fun, even on your most tired days! Check out our calendar for more family fun around RVA!
