I have stopped and started writing this review about Disney’s The Lion King so mane-y times (get it?) because it so is hard to put into words how moved Eloise and I were by the entire experience.
Of course, I’ve always loved the messages – love, courage, friendship – but seeing my daughter’s wide eyes during “He Lives in You” brought the story’s themes to life (and me to tears) in the best possible way.
Eloise was completely captivated by the entire show. Specific highlights for her: the music – my budding pianist just learned “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” and she was ecstatic to hear it live, the vibrantly colorful costumes, and the hilarious banter between Pumbaa and Timon.
And now that all of that’s BEHIND us (if you know you know), here are some helpful details for you all before you see the show.
I suggest watching the animated movie (1994) before going to the show, so your children can connect with the characters, music, and follow the storyline. Eloise loved recognizing each character right away: “Look! There’s Zazu!”
Make sure your kiddos are okay with sitting relatively still for the duration of the three-hour show (length includes intermission) at Altria Theater. Consider a matinée or early-evening show if going to bed after ten o’clock will be too much for your child.
I recommend this show for ages six and up (so does Disney), but as always, you know your child best. Remember, The Lion King’s setting is The Pride Lands, an African kingdom, and Rafiki (my favorite), speaks and sings in a language your child likely won’t understand. This means the show is a great opportunity to learn and teach about African culture.
