Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden celebrates its fortieth anniversary this year with many new family-friendly attractions and events. Here are five wonderful ways to spend a summer day at this 50-acre retreat in the heart of Richmond.

1. Cool Off at Waterway Splash Pad

Newly renovated, the universally accessible Waterway splash pad in the Children’s Garden welcomes young visitors to play in the sprinklers and rain showers, and even features a section with a shallow streambed for the littlest users to sit and splash the flowing water. Beginning in June, Waterway is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. This summer, the Garden will also host Waterway Wednesday evenings, when the splash pad will stay open for play until 8:00 p.m.

2. Climb the Klaus Family Tree House

Take in the view of Sydnor Lake from the universally accessible treehouse, located in the heart of the Children’s Garden. Wind chimes ring out from high in the tree branches while below kids can explore the Adventure Trail, an outdoor play space created with natural materials. The Children’s Garden also includes a 100-year-old Mulberry Tree that’s perfect for climbing; the International Village that brings the world home through globally inspired architecture, cultures, and indigenous plants; and much more.

3. Attend Story Time

Story time is hosted in the Lora M. Robins Library every Friday and Saturday morning at 10 a.m. After listening to two books, children will also be able to participate in a craft activity in the library. When the weather is nice, Storytime is held outside the Kelly Education Center building under the oak trees.

4. Listen to Live Music Outdoors

Relax on Thursday evenings at Flowers After 5, the Garden’s beloved live music series featuring a diverse mix of local and regional acts. Held outdoors in the Grace Arents Garden, there’s plenty of space for kids to dance and move, and food is available for purchase.

5. Experience the Garden for Free

Come and see the Garden for free! This summer, Lewis Ginter will offer three community days with complimentary admission: June 19, in honor of Juneteenth, July 4, to celebrate Independence Day, and September 2, Labor Day.
