Rejuvenating A Playground for Katie and Friends at Huguenot Park

Chesterfield’s Huguenot Park has been home to A Playground for Katie and Friends since 2003. The inclusive play space was the vision of Jane Warrick, Mom to Katie, who wanted a place for all children to play together. Her focus was to create a place of acceptance where children with all types of abilities could play alongside one another.

After 20 years, the beloved playground needed some updating, and since 2003, playground equipment has come a long way, so Chesterfield County surveyed residents to find out what additions and modifications would best serve the community in renovating the playground. The playground officially reopened April 21st, and is truly a blend of accessibility, inclusion, and community.

Accessible Playground Features

In keeping Jane Warrick’s vision in mind, playground features include various types of swings, including a tandem swing and one with back support. There are also bench swings, which are a favorite for grandparents to swing with their grandchildren.

To keep children safe, the playground is fully fenced and gated. There are sensory activities like musical flowers and a sandbox, which has been moved to the shaded area. The entire surface is rubberized and connects to the play equipment.

Thoughtful Design

In addition to the features above, there is a large shade structure over kid-sized picnic tables, so children can stop for a snack break without leaving the fenced-in area. The multiple climbing opportunities, as well as the climbing hills with tunnels underneath, will be a hit for all children.

Community and Connection

Thanks to Jane’s vision over 20 years ago, families of all kinds can play safely together at A Playground for Katie and Friends at Huguenot Park.
