Moderate-to-severe iron deficiency anemia during pregnancy is associated with increased risks including maternal fatigue, dizziness, shortness of breath, preterm birth, low birth weight, slower postpartum recovery, and mood changes in the postpartum period, which is why routine screening is recommended.
Adequate iron supports healthy placental function, fetal brain development, and the mother’s ability to sustain the physical demands of pregnancy and labor. Prenatal iron screening is standard for this reason, and supplementation is commonly recommended when levels fall short.
