With prices on everything from candy to costumes climbing, families are feeling the squeeze this Halloween. A new study by CouponFollow shows that one in five Americans won’t celebrate this year, and 72 percent are cutting back due to inflation. Still, average household spending on Halloween is expected to top $420 and more than $650 for homes with children.

Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia is helping families keep Halloween fun and affordable with 50 percent off costumes, décor and accessories from Oct. 28 through Nov. 6. The nonprofit’s thrift stores offer a smart way to stretch dollars, shop sustainably and support local job-training programs at the same time.

“Families are re-thinking what they spend on celebrations,” said Goodwill Chief Communications Officer Laura Faison. “At Goodwill, you can bring your creative vision to life for a fraction of the price. Every purchase helps someone in our community gain skills and employment.”

Stretch Your Halloween Budget and Give Back with Goodwill

TikTok’s calling the costume shots this year, and Goodwill’s got the goods to make them happen. From DIY Barbie outfits to clever pop-culture mash-ups, stores are stocked with unique finds, fabrics and accessories ready to transform into viral-worthy costumes.

After the holiday, families can donate gently used costumes and decorations back to Goodwill to help others celebrate next year, and keep the Halloween spirit (and savings) going.

Tips for a Thrifty Halloween:

  • Build your look from TikTok or Pinterest inspiration with thrifted pieces.
  • Shop early for the best selection and again during the Oct. 28 sale.
  • Mix, match and DIY accessories for a one-of-a-kind costume.
  • Donate your used décor and costumes to give them a second life.
