Both Czech and Slovak heritage and culture are deeply entwined with the story of Prince George County and have contributed immensely to the community. That heritage is celebrated annually at the Virginia Czech and Slovak Folklife Festival, hosted by the Prince George County Regional Heritage Center. The festival is October 21st from 11am – 4pm at the Heritage Center.

The legacy of the Czech and Slovak community in Prince George dates back over 100 years when hundreds of Czech and Slovak families made the long voyage over land and sea to settle in central Virginia.

Families traveled to Virginia after the Civil War because of the mild climate and the promise of fertile land. The Slavic immigrants were experienced farmers, looking for a new home and life. They gradually acquired farms in Prince George, turning them into productive land once again.

The descendants of the 700 families that migrated to Prince George remain in the county today and take part in the festival.

During the festival, the Czech and Slovak gallery at the Prince George Heritage Center provides a chance for visitors to enjoy the vibrant costumes and glass from the old country. They can learn about family history/genealogy and how to research that history.

Offerings also include a Christmas shop filled with items from the native lands in Europe. All of the Center’s galleries, including the Czech and Slovak Gallery, are open for the day with special exhibits as well as permanent displays.

The festival additionally features live music with authentic Czech and Slovak polkas and waltzes along with delicious food (jidlo), beer (pivo), and music (muszika). The agricultural way of life of the immigrants is explored with expanded farm displays and animals. There will be children’s activities too. Admission and parking are free –food & drinks are available for purchase.
